Sarajevo, BA — 10+ years in IT

Denis Piknjač.

Head of IT — MSSQL Database Developer & Administrator / Datalab Pantheon Developer

You notice IT when it breaks. My job is making sure you never do — I run the SQL Server environments, the infrastructure and the ERP integrations an entire retail operation lives on, and I measure my work in milliseconds.

01 / Expertise

What I do best

Infrastructure

A three-node virtualization cluster, SAN storage, Windows Server, firewalls and site-to-site VPNs linking six-plus locations — designed, hardened and run single-handedly.

BI & Reporting

Dashboards and reports people actually open — Power BI, Jaspersoft and heavily automated Excel. If a number matters to the business, it shows up on time, every time.

Integration & Tooling

Custom middleware, device and payment protocols, and SQL Server Agent automation — the connective tissue between systems that were never designed to talk to each other.

02 / Results

Proof, in production

1,833 ms → 19 ms

Write stalls, gone

Production storage was choking under write load. I traced the stalls through the virtualization stack down to the disk format itself — and rebuilt the storage layout live, with the business running on top of it.

40 s → 4–5 s

The 40-second query

Stock calculation was the slowest thing in the company, and everyone had learned to live with it. I redesigned it from the ground up around indexed views — and made the wait disappear.

66 GB · 0 downtime

Surgery on a live database

Nine core tables and their indexes reorganised onto an entirely new storage architecture while sales kept flowing. Nobody noticed a thing — which was exactly the point.

0 deadlocks

Collisions designed out

Parallel warehouse scanners kept deadlocking each other mid-transaction. Instead of retry band-aids, I rewrote the locking patterns at the root — so collisions became impossible, not just rare.

Where I've worked

2024 — Present

Head of IT · Lead DBA & Database Developer

Penny Plus d.o.o. — Sarajevo

The entire IT operation of a multi-site retail company runs through one pair of hands — mine. A virtualized cluster, SAN storage, SQL Server 2022, networks linking six-plus locations, POS endpoints and warehouse management. From database internals to firewall rules: if it has a connection string or a cable, I own it.

2023

Data Analyst / Database Specialist

Xylon Corporation · Aptha Corp

Short, focused engagements with a single brief: make the data behave. Query optimisation, data modelling and report automation.

2020 — 2023

BI Specialist

ASA Osiguranje d.d. — Sarajevo

Built the reporting backbone of an insurance company — complex T-SQL and PL/SQL feeding actuarial and regulatory reporting, executive dashboards in Power BI, and ETL pipelines that kept the data warehouse honest.
